The Man Behind the Standard.
He was the third bishop of Antioch successor to Peter himself in that great city and a direct disciple of John the Apostle. He had sat at the feet of an eyewitness to the Resurrection. He had heard the faith from those who had touched it with their hands.
And when the Emperor Trajan ordered his arrest around 107 AD, Ignatius did not run.
He was bound in chains and marched across the length of the Roman Empire toward the Colosseum in Rome, where he would be thrown to the lions. But what the empire intended as a death march, Ignatius turned into a mission. Along the way, he wrote seven letters to the churches at Ephesus, Magnesia, Tralles, Rome, Philadelphia, Smyrna, and to his fellow bishop Polycarp. Those letters have never stopped speaking.
He wrote of the Eucharist as the medicine of immortality. He defended the real flesh and blood of Christ against those who claimed it was only a spiritual symbol. He insisted on unity with the bishop as the mark of authentic Christian community. He gave the world one of the earliest uses of the phrase Catholic Church written not as an innovation, but as a description of what already was.
He did not want to be rescued. He begged the church in Rome not to intervene on his behalf. He wanted to be ground by the teeth of lions into pure bread for Christ. He called suffering not a punishment, but a privilege a participation in the death of the Lord he loved.
When he arrived in Rome, the crowd was waiting. So were the lions.
Ignatius of Antioch was devoured in the arena and the Church he had defended with his pen and his blood went on to outlast the empire that killed him.
He is venerated as a saint and martyr. His feast is celebrated on October 17th. His letters are still read. His witness has never gone quiet.
