They meant to display defeat. They documented witness.

Blessed Miguel Agustín Pro continued serving the faithful through a clandestine priestly ministry during Mexico's anti-Catholic persecution. In 1927, he was executed without trial. Facing the firing squad with his arms outstretched in the form of a cross, holding a crucifix and rosary, he bore witness to the kingship of Christ with his final proclamation:

¡Viva Cristo Rey!

This heavyweight tee commemorates that final witness through an original engraved composition inspired by the historic photographs of 1927. The back artwork portrays Blessed Miguel Pro before the firing squad.

The Man Behind the Standard.

Miguel Agustín Pro was not supposed to be a priest in Mexico in 1927. It was illegal.
The Cristero War — the Mexican government's systematic campaign to eradicate public Catholicism — had shuttered churches, expelled foreign clergy, and criminalized the sacraments. Priests who remained did so in secret, moving through safe houses, disguises, and borrowed names. The penalty for being caught was not a fine. It was death.
Pro had been ordained in Belgium in 1925 and returned to Mexico knowing exactly what he was returning to. He threw himself into the underground Church with a convert's fire and a Jesuit's ingenuity. He disguised himself as a beggar, a street sweeper, a businessman, a chauffeur. He celebrated Mass in secret, heard confessions in back rooms, and distributed communion to the faithful who had been locked out of their churches by the state.
He also had a remarkable sense of humor about all of it and the letters and photographs that survive show a man who met danger with joy rather than dread. This was not recklessness. It was the overflow of a soul that had decided, completely and without reservation, that Christ was worth it.
In November 1927, he was arrested on a fabricated charge of attempted assassination of a former president a charge even the government's own investigation could not substantiate. There was no trial. President Plutarco Elías Calles ordered his execution anyway, and then made a decision that would outlast his regime by a century: he invited the press to photograph it.
He wanted the images to intimidate. To demonstrate the power of the state over the Church. To show what happened to those who refused to comply.

Miguel Pro walked to the wall without a blindfold. He spread his arms wide in the form of a cross, crucifix in one hand, rosary in the other, and forgave his executioners. Then he lifted his voice over the rifles and proclaimed what he had spent his hidden priesthood proclaiming in secret:
¡Viva Cristo Rey!
Long live Christ the King.
