The Battle Behind the Standard.

The year was 1565. The Ottoman Empire was the most powerful military force on earth.
Suleiman the Magnificent had already taken Rhodes, Belgrade, and Budapest. He had humiliated the Knights of Saint John once before — forcing them off the island of Rhodes in 1522 after a brutal siege. Now he intended to finish the job. Malta was the last outpost. If it fell, the western Mediterranean was open. Europe's southern flank would be exposed. The cross would be driven from the sea.
He sent approximately 40,000 men. The Knights numbered around 500, supported by perhaps 6,000 Maltese soldiers and militia.
The math was not encouraging.
Fort St. Elmo was the first to absorb the fury. A small fortress at the tip of the peninsula, it was deemed by Ottoman commanders a matter of days to reduce. It held for thirty-one days. When it finally fell, it had cost the Ottomans an estimated 8,000 men — including their most decorated naval commander, Dragut, struck down by debris from a cannonball.
Upon seeing the price his forces had paid to take one small fort, the Ottoman commander Mustafa Pasha reportedly looked across the harbor at the far larger Fort St. Angelo and said: "If so small a son has cost us so dear, what price shall we have to pay for so great a father?"
The Knights did not merely defend stone. They defended something older and harder than stone — a faith received from the Apostles, carried through crusades and exile and blood, and planted on a small island in the middle of a very hostile sea.
Grand Master Jean Parisot de Valette was seventy years old. He refused to leave. He armed himself and prepared to die in the breach with his men. When relief finally arrived from Sicily on September 7th, the Ottoman force — devastated, exhausted, and broken — withdrew.
The Great Siege of Malta was over.
